PeaceWorks an initiative of The Seagull Foundation for the Arts that works through the Arts, with young minds, to nurture an attitude of peaceful coexistence has been successfully conducting the Share Stories Open Minds project in association with the Kolkata Police project Nabadisha since early 2011. Completely volunteer based the initiative uses the powerful art of story telling to instill values on the one hand and develops imagination and confidence on the other.
Nabadisha is an initiative that provides primary education and mid-day meals to street and slum children in 16 police stations across the city. Beginning with just two centres in just over a year's time we are now working in eight centres. Our volunteers—a wonderfully diverse group—from students to senior citizens—are bringing a tremendous amount of insight to the project, not just by reading or telling stories but also bringing valuable life experience to their work—that of bringing ideas of harmonious coexistence, learning to live with difference and making peace work—in the most fun and imaginative way.
During the course of the past one-year we find that now the Nabadisha children have also become storytellers. They wait anxiously for the volunteers—not because they want to listen to their stories—but because they are armed with stories that they wish to narrate.
To encourage this we organized a 'Golpo Mela' — The PeaceWorks Storytelling Festival in association with Kolkata Police and Radio Mirchi, for children from all over the city and especially for the children of Nabadisha. The event was held at Mohor Kunj [Citizen's Park opposite Rabindra Sadan], Calcutta. The idea is to encourage the Nabadisha children, create a platform where children from diverse backgrounds come together to have fun and celebrate together in the true spirit of children's day. This is intended to also encourage the love for stories, reading and story telling and listening amongst all the children.
